The slums of Auckland, 1900. This was the start of the city councils recognition that whole tracts of central Auckland was not only sub-standard residentially, but that something should be done about it -- a process that continued through to the 1970s at least. What triggered things in 1900 was the plague scare, with cases of bubonic plague appearing across the Tasman -- and even some deaths here, but not all that many. Still, the housing conditions was seen as something city fathers should sort out. Even then, we aimed for a liveable city, although the terminology used was different.
