The smallest unit of society is the individual. What relationship, then, does the individual have to his society or, more basic still, how does he con tribute to the formation of that society? This leads to yet further considera tions: what must the individual lose or sacrifice in deference to the super structure? are the vestiges of primitive selfhood truly eradicated or are they transformed, sublimated, repressed? why does the individual deliver him self up to society? and, lastly, how does the superstructure operate upon the individual to keep him safely in line?
