The social sciences are actually pretty easy to understand as a pursuit. Question: how does society work? Basic answer: it works by working together - the more it works together, the better it works in general. Everything essentially derives from there. It is about finding out how to better relate to other human beings, understand their struggles, and work closer to a common cause so that our society may work better, and better, and better. The gist of historical studies is summed up in the saying, Those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it. The gist of economics lies in increasing prosperity and productivity for the world. The gist of political science is to study the mechanisms of government in order to find what elements, structures, patterns, or practices therein work best for society. As opposed to the natural sciences, social science does not ask the question, What cant be done? but rather it asks, What more can be done? You might say it is a creative science ever seeking new ways to establish connections and interactions toward ever more positive ends. It employs a different mode of Reason - not some wishy-washy philosophy of free love and peace, but a question of, What can our rational minds say about these matters? Social Science is a real science and an important one. Everyone benefits from it. Just thought I should say.
