The soup kitchen at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Chicago, - TopicsExpress

The soup kitchen at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Chicago, Illinois first opened their doors 27 years ago. Originally they were only open one day a week for lunch. They are now open every Tuesday and Thursday to serve breakfast AND lunch. They average 75 to 100 people a day; most live in the community around the church. The majority are Hispanic, Anglo-Eastern European, and African American. St Matthew is able to continue this ministry from the support they receive from congregations and from donors who respond to appeals through LCC. When LCC staff recently visited the soup kitchen, there was a volunteer crew of 10 people helping to prepare the meal and serve. Throughout the year, beginning with the second Tuesday and Thursday to the end of the month, they always have a need of 10 to 12 volunteers to set up and serve meals.
