“The spiritual paternity of the priesthood is real, sharing in the joys and sorrows of every family in his parish: as he baptizes and buries, as he witnesses marriages and counsels marriages in failure, as he laughs and, at times, cries with all of the people who come to him as father, seeking the Father’s love and care. Recognizing the fruitfulness and generatively of his life through his spiritual children is source of genuine joy for the priest. His life of love and service is indeed fecund and so beyond him. He realizes that he is a vessel — a conduit for the Father to make the Son through the Holy Spirit present in the world. Through this, he does not suppress his virility but allows God to use him, and, in turn, he experiences the joy of spiritual fecundity.” Reclaiming Our Priestly Character (Revised Edition), Father David L Toups, STD
