The sports performance enhancement and fitness industry is on a postural restoration tear...and rightly so. Look around and you will see the compensatory asymmetries that used to be solely and aged or homeless symptom. First initiated by Pete Egoscue (The Egoscue Method) in San Diego ( was given his book by one of his therapists while living there...read first chapter...missed the boat!) and most recently by Grey Cook (Movement...and his FMS ( Functional Movement Screen ), a seven step assessment of mobility and stability initially geared toward athletes. Egoscue looked at Design Form, the deviations off of what we were originally born with...3 rectangles piled on top of each other...that with evolution, minimal movement needed to survive, computers and yes, over padded, high healed snekers, shoes that started our demise and functional, balanced human beings. Anterior pelvic tilt, thoracic rounding, inverted or everted feet ( many cases, the ankles are actually the source of the foot symptom.. Mr. Cook and Mr Egoscue both have the same intention...one was looking at the obvious macro evidence that a mere visual inspection could assess, Mr. Cook went much further, more micro and founded a brilliant basic dynamic assessment system that all strength coaches, physical therapists, trainers, etc can/should use. Mr Egoscue prescribed a stretching/reposturing protocol based on the visual evidence (ex. Condition 2...upper torso rotation...one shoulder higher that the other) while Mr. Cook used his dynamic movement screens and subsequent corrective exercises per the assessment results. There are several stretches that are utilized in the newer, more scientific FMS...a runners stretch, an upper spinal floor twist as examples. Both are phenomenal for virtually everyone to follow. After almost 20 surgeries, I have found huge benefit personally and with virtually every client, every athlete I have worked with using a combination of both. Many have meticulously followed and have squared shoulders, hips, left and right side asymmetries gone, heads tilted laterally ( to one side ) alleviated. Per Mr Egoscue the muscles lead the bones and nerves. He knew we were all falling out of design form and was intuitively way ahead of the postural restore curve in the early 90s. Mr. Cook has made it a template for all to use. We are in Orange County NY/NYC helping those unaware in most cases of their excessive sitting, one side dominant sports asymmetry, etc and its affect on their posture. Ocassionally we press and pull and squat heavy things, then rest/repeat amongst other fun things. First, move on back to square as the Yes song details, retain your postural integrity, your design form before progressing with speed, quickness, power, strength,...hell, all intended adaptations or your potential will not be attained.
