The statement by Steve Jobs that good artists copy, great artists - TopicsExpress

The statement by Steve Jobs that good artists copy, great artists steal has evoked some controversy in the past. But thinking about this statement, my thought is that all artists (and artisans) whether they be writers, painters, musicians or even chefs and software engineers, have to some extent reflect the early influences in their lives. For example, rock guitarist Eric Clapton was influenced by blues king B.B. King; Auguste Renoir was influenced in his paintings by Claude Monet; John Grisham was influenced by American novelist John Steinbeck. Im sure many chefs took their cue from Julia Childs, or software engineers/programmers from code gods out there like Dennis Ritchie. Before we get our own creative identity, we need to closely study and deconstruct the technique of those we consider as our masters and influences. They dont need to be well-known artists, but only show they are good at what they do.
