The stereotype of a soldier as a gritty man, covered with dirt and blood, fighting in trenches, is giving way to a new truth about the modern American soldier. We know from Army National Guard Sgt. Breinne Travers Sullivan of Marshfield and the Rockland mother-daughter team of National Guard Army Sgt. Marilyn Gonzalez and Spc. Jessica Pedraza that women also serve their country with distinction. One of the battles for women is an acknowledgment by the military and society that they face a unique set of challenges above and beyond those of their male counterparts. Many female veterans and active service members echo comments that have long been made by male service members, that their civilian friends do not fully understand what it means to be in the military, and even less what it means to be deployed.
