The store is Tims territory, not mine. I stopped by just now. He just said, May I help you, Victor? He raised his eyebrows at me, too. His coldness hurt my feelings. But he saw how my face fell, so he tried to make up for it, at least partly. He said, Ive got to see to my other guests, dont you think? Well, I had to agree with him about that. Then he just turned and walked away. Tim is a different man in his store uniform. He doesnt want the wealthy customers to see him stop and talk to his partner - a gay man. But at least he texted me right away. It was a very funny message. Tim especially doesnt like it when I sample food items, even though many shoppers do that. I nearly got the boot once for eating an olive. I guess the only way to avoid getting the cold shoulder from my partner is to stay away from his store. Its the only place hes ever unfriendly to me. But Im also self-conscious at my office whenever he has visited. When he made a catering delivery, he stood very close to me, just talking in his usual way. A lady at the office said to me later, That was your partner, wasnt it? That man loves you. I dont see how she could determine all that from seeing two guys talking about hors doeuvre. Somebody on our team must have told her. FHI Tim and I are civil union partners, but we do not love each other. Thats not macho. Im attuned to his feelings so I can be a better buddy. I encourage him to vent whatever hes feeling. But his unexpected cold shoulder at the store gives me a pang that feels like a physical injury. Tim can run hot and cold when he wants to. When hes hot, hes hot. When hes not, hes not. Tim said, Text me what you need. Ill buy it and bring it home, little buddy. Actually, hes very good at that.
