The stories that inspire us and which we remember are the seemingly impossible ones. Hayao Miyazaki accomplishes this all the time, but especially in his film, Spirited Away. The main character, a cowardly city girl named Chihiro who has stumbled into a parallel universe inhabited by spirits, is hired at a bathhouse run by a cruel and savvy witch. As the naive newcomer, Chichiro is coerced into many duties that might seem too much for her. Oh, the god of all putrescence and filth has wandered into your bathhouse, dragging a pool of slime and knocking employees unconscious with his stench? Clean him! (Its worth finding out what happens.) Ive found myself caught up in a similar story. Two and a half years ago I stumbled upon a person and an opportunity that both seemed utterly unattainable. The two of us, facing this horizon together, calculated all the logistics. A combination of socioeconomic, geographical and psychological factors made it literally the least likely thing to ever happen in our lives. Therefore, it needed to happen. She prepared the garden and I grew the wings to get there. That in itself was a heros journey for us both. Three months ago, I flew across the sea and planted myself down. Since late August, we have faced more harrowing challenges than in the two years prior. The threats posed to us and the obstacles thrown in our path have often brought us to the conclusion that we should stop. That was why we kept going. Now were on the tail end of the struggle once again and preparing for the next impossibility.
