The story behind OLD DOGS is an interesting one. It was originally intended to be an R-rated “comedy with a heart”, in the same vein as 40 YEAR-OLD VIRGIN and KNOCKED UP. Test audiences, however, hated it. As a result, something like 20 minutes were cut out, and the rest was cobbled together into a PG movie. The movie that survived is a collection of scenes that seemingly exist in a vacuum; plotlines are abandoned, name actors appear and disappear, and there are several other things for which there are no words. OLD DOGS is a mess, but it is also – without exaggeration – one of my favorite movies. If my math is correct, I have seen the movie OLD DOGS a total of 14 times. It is the movie I have seen more times in the past five years than any other movie, and it’s not even close. It’s a movie I recommend to friends (admittedly to mixed reviews). It’s a movie I have seen three times in one weekend. It’s the only movie I’ve ever recorded a commentary track for, with Andrew Rosas, where I professed my love for this movie. One of the main reasons I have grown to legitimately love this movie is because Robin Williams doesn’t take a single scene off. He gives 100% for the entire movie, seemingly oblivious to the overall quality of the movie he was making. That hustle is the thing I’ll respect most about him. I didn’t love everything he did, but I admire how he treated every movie, every performance, every talk show appearance like it was going to, one day, be someone’s favorite memory of him. Thank you for OLD DOGS, Robin Williams. Thank you for everything.
