The story of Umar Ibn Al Khattab & The boy who killed a man.. During the time of Umar Ibn Al Khattab (May Allah be pleased with him), there were two men who brought in a young boy. Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) asked, Why have you brought him here? They said, This boy killed our father. Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) asked the boy if this was true and the boy replied, Yes its true but it was an accident. My camel used to tread on their property so their father took a rock and hit my camel in the eye. My camel suffered, it angered me.. So I took a rock and hit the man on the head and he died. So Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) asked the two brothers, Will you forgive this boy? They replied, No! We want retribution. Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) asked the boy, Do you have any last wishes? The boy replied, Yes. My father left some money for my younger brother before he passed away. I would like 3 days to retrieve this wealth for my brother before I die ..Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) doesnt believe him at first, so he asks the boy to find someone who will be his guarantor to guarantee his return. The boy looks around the packed courtroom, hoping someone will come forward but everyone turns their faces away or lowers their heads. From the back of the courthouse, Abu Dharr al Ghifari (one of the Sahabah who gave Dawah to so many tribes) puts his hand up. He accepted knowing that if the boy did not return, Abu Dhaars head will be chopped off and he will be killed! He didnt even know the boy. So the boy goes away, the 1st day goes by & the boy is nowhere to be seen. The 2nd day passes & no sign.. Finally its Asr on the third day..The two men come to Abu Dhar al Ghifari & tell him to come to the courthouse. He says, I will come but the day does not end till Maghrib. The courthouse is filling up, anxiety is building up. Minutes before the Adhan of Maghrib, the boy rushes in! Umar asks the boy, Why did you come back? He said, I did not want anyone to say a Muslim gave his word & did not keep it so I came back.Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) then asked Abu Dharr. He says, I saw a Muslim in need & I didnt want anyone to say a Muslim was in need & noone was there to help. The 2 brothers then said, How can a Muslim ask for forgiveness and there is no one there to forgive him? So they forgave him! SubhanAllah... This was the legacy of Islam. This was the code if conduct, this is why the SAHABAS (companions) were able to achieve great things and were so successful because they had a strong relationship with Allah... They were united... They did things with Ihsaan... They loved for their brother what they loved for themselves!!!
