The struggle to save the Aru islands Thanks to the Aru islanders - TopicsExpress

The struggle to save the Aru islands Thanks to the Aru islanders themselves their struggle from a small archipelago in the outer corners of eastern Indonesie became a broad based (inter)national Save Aru movement. On april 10th 2014 the Indonesian Minister of Forestry Mr. Zulkifli Hasan stated in an interview with Ekuatorial that he will not sign the permits that the PT Menara group needed to open the giant sugar-cane plantation. The Aru islands are still in danger for these land and water grabbing deals. The race for forest land continues by other investors like the Nusa Ina Group who (again) began to infiltrate and trying to convince the customary landowners to sell their land. The latest participant goes by the name of PT WSA (Waha Sejahtera Abadi). There is very little known about this latest company. Indonesian organisations like Forest Watch Indonesia and AMAN ((Indigenous Peoples Alliance of the Archipelago) keep on supporting the Save Aru Movement by monitoring it’s forest condition and strengthening the people’s awareness by informing that they are the main stakeholders of the islands future as the owners of the ‘hak ulayat’( indigenous land rights ) which are officially not yet recognized and acknowledged by the government for these small islands.
