The summarise the lecture I attended today: before I totally forget about ..lol... The way our mind works is that we make faster action oriented decisions when faced with fewer tasks ( 1 or 2) and we dont take any action at all when the complexity of tasks increases. Herein lies the answer to procrastination. We become overwhelmed in the face of a complex task which is a protection mechanism set in place by the limbic brain and amygdala which make up our paleo - ancient- brain. The task of making a decision and taking action on it is similar to an anxiety attack which sends currents which shut down the prefrontal cortex (the conscious decision making part of the brain) similar to fight and flight response. Now interestingly they did studies with doctors by looking at how certain circumstances influence their decision making - doctors should not be influenced in their decision making by anything when it comes the well-being of the patient - yet they reacted exactly the same way as someone who never had any form of training - and instead of making a decision then taking action in which they had to reconsider their initial decision which was potentially good for the patient they didnt ... the complexity of recalling and rethinking made them not take any decision at all and let the patients undergo unnecessary and potentially dangerous procedures.
