The talk about newbie collectors made me pull this from my shelves. When I was 11 I found this disc underneath a shelf at the Salvation Army (in the same condition it is in right now). I was curious about it (and it was single sided...cool!) so I took it home for a whopping 25 cents. I searched for Victor Talking Machine Company and John McCormack on our old dial up internet and came across this thing called the Old Time Victrola Music Message Board. From there I kept on reading about these old machines and all these musicians from ages ago, so I decided to start collecting (even though I had no turntable or any way to hear the music). I saved up my allowance money and dragged my folks to thrift stores, antique shops and estate sales finding these old records with the labels and names I saw on the internet. Fortunately, I had a charitable music teacher in grammar school who lent me an old Califone for a year so I could hear the music. I talked so much about it that the same generous fellow allowed me to take home his fathers VV-50 for a week. I spent that entire week in the basement with that thing for hours on end changing needles, cranking, and playing my records. That summer I saved up for a VV-VI off of Ebay....many experiences later, having a newspaper article published and having strangers give me records, making my high school economics class sit through my 45 minute presentation on the history of the VTMC and swimming in records I still wouldnt part with this beat up old thing.
