The theme of the 24th Philippine Biodiversity Symposium is Island Biodiversity Symposium: Successes, Challenges and Future Directions to emphasize the importance and vulnerability of islands. They are worth far more than mere island-hopping destinations: Islands cover about 3% of the world’s surface yet they contain a disproportional amount of biodiversity, and endemic species; one third of the biodiversity hotspots are islands; islands can demonstrate the effects of invasive alien species and climate change before they are felt on larger land masses; and islands are the most susceptible to climate change despite being the least contributor to it (source: CBD fact sheet).
