The ticket given to Nilekani is symptomatic of the innate double think we all have as Indians. The rules clearly state that tickets are given only to those who have worked for 3 years for the party. But an exception has instantly been made. Systemic accountability is simply not a part of our DNA as yet, there is always, always privilege and bending the rule book for those close to power. This is professionalism and modernity as we understand it. Nilekani oversaw the setting of the most intrusive Big Brother apparatus the Indian state yet has, so nothing better can be expected from him. But Rahul has just lost whatever last bits of credibility he had as being sincere in changing the way things work. It is more of the same, much is the pity.
