The tradition of Halloween traces back to the Celtic people about 2,000 years ago. They held an ancient Pagan festival where they believed the dead could walk/communicate with the living at the time. Celtics wore costumes in order to trick wandering spirits into believing that they were one of their own, so they wouldnt be bothered. They also offered sweet treats to the spirits in order to appease (calm) them. Pumpkins & jack-o-lanterns were carved & lit with candles to represent dead souls trapped in purgatory (hell), or to sway off evil spirits.
