The translated excerpt below comes from the article The “new factories” of Bulgaria, posted by Капитал. “Forget about India. Bulgaria awaits you.” With this title Business Week magazine marked the rise of a whole new industry in Eastern Europe in early 2004. It was all about outsourcing, or nearshoring – moving companies, or parts of the business operations in nearby countries. At the time large multi-national companies had already discovered the European East as a convenient and relatively cheap region to move their customer service to. While Poland and the Czech Republic were on the investors’ radar at the time, in Bulgaria this “industry” developed at a slower pace. Despite that, even ten years later Business Week’s article proved to be prophetic. The outsourced customer service centers offer jobs to over 15000 people and generate annual income of 200 mil. Euro. The forecasts for the upcoming years suggest that this market will double its size.
