The “translation slam” held on the penultimate day of the Writers of India Festival in Paris last month was among the festival’s most enjoyable events, chiefly owing to its treacherous format. Three writers and six translators took the stage to work their way through three pieces of text, in discussions that flowed rapidly between English and French. Two interpreters worked furiously to translate all the discussions between English and French for audience members who listened through headsets on a French or English channel. At the last moment, the interpreters were even called on to further translate—or untranslate, if you will—the translated French texts into English versions as they were being read out.
