"The true self gets little recognition, support, or nurturing from our family or from the world as we are growing up. In fact, our true Self may even get us into a lot of trouble! Being our Self involves playing, moving, shouting, creating and doing what we love, and just generally exploring our experience whenever we want The Self is met with controlling energy and often judgment and punishment so that we and everyone around us can function within the established environment. In other words, we shut down as we learn to participate in the structure of the family and the society into which we were born. Our personality develops as the most comfortable way to exist within that environment. In general, those of us who are "good" kids and "good" students adapt more quickly and easily to hose forces. But, unfortunately, the resulting personality or false self is not who we really are. Once the personality becomes solid, we have a fixed identity. From that point on, the entire world supports us in maintaining our false self." ~~Light Medicine: Evolving our Body, Our Life, and Our Planet" by Dr. Michael D. Winer
