The two boys from across the street (ages 7 and 8) were over playing Legos with our son in his room. I was in the room next door, not really paying attention to what they were doing until I heard one of the neighbor boys ask our son, Do you have a disease? I couldnt tell if it was accusatory or not, whether he was saying our son had done something wrong, so I braced for the worst and started paying attention. While I couldnt hear everything, they were actually having a serious discussion. Our son explained that its not a disease, its just something different in his brain. Its called Autism, he told them. It makes him super smart, but also makes him shy, making it hard to make friends. Well, youve got us! replied the neighbor boy without skipping a beat. They kept playing Legos for another hour before lunchtime. I think we really like it here. I also think thats the first time our son has brought up his Autism with his peers. Super impressed with all parts of the conversation.
