The unabated encroachment of agriculture and wetland has been a matter of concern. Making the matters worse, the concerned authorities have reportedly failed to maintain revenue records and ownership of the government land, paving way for its encroachment by the land grabbers. As reported by this newspaper, different departments claiming possession of the encroached land are trying to shift responsibility for not maintaining valid land documents, which would have allowed the government to prove its ownership and identify the culprits. The latest tussle between Revenue and Wildlife Department has emerged after the newly formed House Committee of Assembly headed by MLA Hakim Yaseen expressed serious concern over inadequate records with them. The house panel, which met on Tuesday, has directed officials of various departments including the Land Settlement Officer to prepare proper records of the encroached land and conduct fresh mapping. They were also asked to submit status report within a month. Earlier, High court had ordered that no discrimination can be tolerated in any of the land grab cases. The verdict paved way for government departments to restart the process of issuing show-cause notices to the encroachers on the priced agriculture, grazing and wetland. Reportedly, there has been no headway in this regard as officials require valid land documents to prove government’s ownership over the land. Earlier, the government seemed to have finally realized the dangers posed by unabated land grabbing in the state. A high-level probe was ordered into the illegal practice to identify and punish the culprits involved in land grabbing. The state exchequer has been incurring huge losses owing to the nexus between politicians and land mafia.
