The uwezo Survey findings for 2012 are out! So what? For the Rays - TopicsExpress

The uwezo Survey findings for 2012 are out! So what? For the Rays of Hope Initiative (ROHI) it means the outcome of a vigorous study undertaken by over 60 volunteers drawn from 30 villages in Limuru District. Our heartfelt acknowledgements go out to each one of them, to our partners and Government officials who allowed the activity to take place in all the schools within Limuru, to the parents who opened doors for volunteers to assess their children and to the children who were interviewed. We thank you. The results paint a scary image on education Nationally with the averages saying that “only 3 out of 10 children in class 3 can do class 2 work” (Uwezo Kenya, 2012)...As a headline it’s scary but all is not necessarily lost. What does the report say about Limuru District Subject % of that can read Aya 68.1% Paragraph 69.1% Substraction 79.5% Schools with computers 35.7% Above is a snippet of the findings for Limuru District. The findings have received all manner of doubt.. ”this is a fallacy”, “it cannot be”….and any other that we have all said including reading the statement two or three times, reversing to see it as a positive. As an Initiative we appreciate that it’s natural to question, moreover at this age in time where anything can mean something “ digital error” it’s easy to doubt. While we cast doubt and deny, lets ponder and ask, where are our priorities? In Late 2012 when the term “tyranny of Numbers” came to being, we all made it a household name because it was politically correct, maybe the findings are not! Facts don’t lie and only time will tell, if you flashback on the performance levels in primary and secondary schools within Limuru in the last years and compare that to the findings maybe there is more to it. Unfortunately/fortunately the facts don’t mention names but all we know is that the survey was conducted to our Son’s, Neighbors, siblings and nationally a potential workforce. Maybe on your wall there is an Uwezo calendar. The sad truth is that it could be your Son, daughter, brother or Sister. As Dr.John Mugo put it “we need to stop blaming one another and pursue the welfare of our children. The facts say that our children are going to school, but a lot needs to be done so that they can learn. As always ROHI our community is our responsibility. A copy of the report is available for referencing at the Rays Of Hope resource centre. For further details you can reach Uwezo Limuru District Coordinator. Lets engage in the debate constructively...... Article by Kuria Mbugua Uwezo Limuru District Coordinator Titayo09@gmail
