The veil has been drawn back... we can stop pretending now. - TopicsExpress

The veil has been drawn back... we can stop pretending now. Likkud has finally admitted that they are the Israeli branch of the US Republican party. A recent article also revealed that Netanyahus reelection campaign is getting nearly all of its funding from American donors (presumably mostly conservatives/hawks). In my opinion, this is detrimental to Israels democracy (to whom should the PM answer to? His American donor and their agenda, or the interests of the Israeli people?). It also hurts the American Jewish communitys efforts to support Israel, which have historically attempted, at least on paper, to be non-partisan. Undermining protocol by circumventing the White House makes it that much harder for us to influence the administration and it goes one step further in confirming the accusations that the so-called Israel Lobby has a grip on American foreign policy (which is not true... but stuff like this sure makes it look that way). This also confirms what Ive been saying for a long time... that most US politicians are less interested in supporting Israel than they are in using Israel as a wedge issue to peel off Jewish voters and donors. Ultimately this is bad for the American Jewish community and our interest in keeping Israel Jewish, democratic and safe because it divides us against ourselves and it allows outsiders who dont have our best interest in mind to influence our agenda. I suspect that to many members of Congress the Iran sanctions issue is not about what is in Israels interest or even in Americas interest, but rather what is in their political interest (i.e. raising money to get elected). We shouldnt play political football with Israel. Israels security and future is too important for that.
