The very cold air of the last 2 weeks has caused rapid ice growth on Lake Erie. The most shallow of the Great Lakes, Erie is often the first to freeze. However, with very little ice observed on the lake as recently as late December, Erie is now mostly ice covered - an unusually rapid change. Contrast Lake Erie with the much deeper Lake Ontario that has very little ice cover. Because of its depth, Lake Ontario almost never freezes completely, even during the coldest winters. Ice cover on the Great Lakes substantially reduces the amount of lake effect snow because liquid water from the lake surface can no longer evaporate into the cold air passing over the lake.
