The very first tree that Tom Muller planted in 1963 at the National Botanic Gardens is in flower, a Millicia excelsa, male tree. The common names of these bastions of a better forestry age are Mvule and they once were extremely common huge timber trees in Uganda and other high rainfall areas of East Africa. Much favoured roosting trees there for Giant fruit bats. Very good furniture. These are the Iroko or Mvule of Nyahungwe mentioned as Tree no 73 of Lyn Mullins Historic Trees of Zimbabwe, remnants of a wetter time and surviving on the banks of the Runde River. In the second picture, Tom Muller regales Tree Society members today, with personal anecdotes, dangerously positioned under a falling Albizia gummifera trunk in the Botanical Garden.
