The victim of a Tuesday morning shooting at a Tempe intersection has died at a Valley hospital, and a suspect has been arrested, Tempe police said. Victim Zachary Rodriguez, 21, was acquainted with the suspect, Moises Gutierrez, 22, said Sgt. Mike Pooley, a police spokesman. Detectives interviewed several witnesses at the scene and are still trying to learn the motive for the slaying, he said. The shooting occurred at about 6 a.m. Tuesday after a fender bender at Baseline Road and 48th Street, police said. However, the incident apparently wasn’t random road rage, and a chase of some sort preceded the collision, Pooley said. “These guys knew each other. We don’t know the relationship. … We know there was some kind of relationship between the suspect and the victim and a female,” Pooley said, referring to a woman who was a passenger in the car. Police said the vehicles, a Lincoln Navigator and a Honda passenger car, were attempting to turn south onto 48th street when the Lincoln rear-ended the Honda. Police said a man exited the Honda and began shooting at the Navigator, hitting the passenger multiple times, including in the head. Shortly after the shooting, a federal Department of Homeland Security agent driving through the intersection on his way to work stopped, got out of his vehicle and disarmed the car’s driver, detaining him until police arrived. Bystanders giving aid to the wounded man had told the federal agent that there’d been a shooting, and they identified the suspect to him, Pooley said. “The suspect was very compliant,” Pooley said. The 48th Street and Baseline Road intersection was closed for an undetermined period of time, police said.
