The video of the spruce grouse isnt from the bog but Ill get to that later in the post. I also went to Lake County. More rough legged hawks are starting to appear in the bog, what makes them so cool is the variety of colors they come in and they way the hoover over fields while hunting. The best spot to look for rough legs is along Hwy 7 and Sax Rd. There are three of them that are hanging out regularly between Hwy 7 and the railroad tracks. The northern finches are arriving and now there are red polls at the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog visitor center, along with purple finches, pine siskins, American tree sparrows and the regular bog resident birds. Mary Sues feeders on CR 444 have had evening grosbeaks at them recently and she added a parking pad that can fit up to 8 cars! Great gray owls have become more viewable this week with them showing up on both Admiral Rd and McDavitt Rd. Kelly Deneen Raymond found her lifer great gray with Erik Berg on Saturday. I found a GGO on McDavitt Rd in the evening down a logging trail to the East across from the parking pad. Sunday evening I found another great gray on Admiral Rd. I have also been seeing great grays on Hwy 27 heading towards hwy 5 in the evenings on my way home. So far no hawk owls or snowys have been reported in the bog. Sunday morning I went to Lake County to Isabella Lake and found 2 Northern Hawk Owls, Pine grosbeaks, redpolls and three otters. Black backed wood peckers are still being seen in the area as well. I saw numerous spruce grouse on the forest roads and took a video of the hen above On Stoney River Forest Rd. In the afternoon I headed down to Two Harbors and found 8 cackling geese mixed with the Canada Geese on the golf course and 4 Ross geese behind the visitor information center on Hwy 61. On Saturday Nov. 8th firearm season for deer starts so make sure to wear blaze orange if you go out! Ill be posting picture from this week on my photography page through out the week.
