The visitor to Corinth could not help but be impressed by the business and bustle of this prosperous Roman colony. Corinth was cosmopolitan, multicultural, commercially prosperous and with it all utterly corrupt. Acrocorinth, the fortified hill overlooking the city was a sanctuary of sin and perverted pagan religious practices. The outlook in the city was one of inclusivism, moral relativism and anything goes. Such a philosophy arose not out of any deep conviction of what was right and wrong but rather from a desire to obliterate the distinction between right and wrong, leaving the way open to deeper and deeper depths of unjudged, uncriticised depravity. The name Corinth itself had become a byword in the Greek world for hedonism and licentious behaviour. The stoop into the gutter was so complete and the distance between God and man so great that it had become almost impossible to tell the difference between 1st century Greece and 21st Century Britain.
