The voice-that combination of beautiful ache and melancholy-trembles at the sound of its own, unmistakable longing. It is an aural vignette of yesteryear, when those in pursuit of a jazzy night out on the town stop in just to gather round, in loves sad café, to listen to the dapper, dark-haired, sad-eyed crooner. The singer in the corner, under the golden candlelight, serenading those who have come to sit and watch him perform, is Gregory Page. He is a San Diego institution, who has been entertaining audiences with his sweet laments for more than two decades. Pages legacy is now firmly entrenched in the sounds of a musical past taken from the chapters of that great American storybook, when his musical brethren heralded the arrival of black and white cinema, speakeasies and Prohibition. Born in London, England, Page is of Armenian-Irish descent, hails from a musical family. His uncle, Dave Page, Jr., from Dublin, Ireland, was the original drummer for Tom Jones, and who has also performed on the soundtrack of Monty Pythons Flying Circus. Pages mother, Moyra Page, was the lead singer in The Beat-Chics, who opened for The Beatles in Spain, in 1965. It has been documented that Page, as a young child, sat on the knee of Paul McCartney, while they were in attendance at a bull fight, in Spain. When the conquistador went in for the final kill, the Beatle covered the eyes of Page, so that he wouldnt witness the last, dying moments of the gasping, bloodied bull. Gregory Page has a definitive, vocal style that harkens back to the magic of the 1930s crooner, Al Bowlly, who greatly influenced him. His recording ethics are such, that at last count, he has released more than 32 CDs of his music, on his own record label, Bed Pan Productions, and A.J.Croces Seedling Records. Page has worked and recorded with John Doe, of the punk band X, Jewel, Steve Poltz, actor John C. Reilly, Miss Erika Davies and A.J. Croce. His collaborator and friend, Jason Mraz, has said this about the brilliant Page-Hes the real deal, a rare gift. So true, Sir Page, because thats you... (Photos courtesy of Gregory Page)
