"The war destroyed the coffee market, so Edward’s only source of income was now worthless. With no market, most other farmers let their coffee ruin, focusing on subsistence food crops. But not Edward — he kept working his farm, hoping and trusting that someday the market would return and, with it, his income and his pride as a coffee farmer. When our group walked into his farm, Edward knew that time had come. As I neared him, he offered his hand and said, “I’m Edward and I’m a coffee farmer” and then we walked down a mango tree-lined lane and discussed coffee for what seemed an eternity. He told me that for 23 years he maintained his 7 acres of coffee, selling only tidbits locally, living solely on the faith that God would one day answer his prayers. Now that is determination. I’ve done a lot of things in my life from opening restaurants to running businesses and raising kids but today I was the answer to one farmer’s 23 years of prayer. Who would have guessed it?" —Russell Hayward in "Bringing Hope (and Coffee) Back to South Sudan buff.ly/17Ot6Ji
