The warning has been passed down to Americans from the days of the Founding Fathers: that if most Americans ever decide to start using their votes to get the government to give them freebies from the public Treasury, it will be the beginning of the end of America. It’s hard not to think of that when you see this week’s news that according to the latest Census figures, 49 percent of America’s population is now receiving some kind of government benefits. That includes a staggering 82 million-plus households receiving Medicaid benefits. It’s no surprise that according to Republicans on the Senate Budget Committee, over the past five years, the US government have spent about $3.7 trillion on welfare. That’s trillion, with a “t.” And no, that’s doesn’t include Social Security and Medicare. The amount spent on welfare over the past five years is nearly five times more than all money spent on NASA, education and federal transportation projects, put together. And most of that period was a time when the recession was officially over. I still believe that most Americans would still much rather have a job than a handout. But if we don’t want to lose the greatness of America, then the government needs to start thinking at least as much about creating jobs as it does about creating giveaway programs.
