The way that the Royal Society saw its role in promoting the New Philosophy is illustrated by its publication of Robert Hooke’s Micrographia or some Physiological Descriptions of Minute Bodies made by Magnifying Glasses with Observations and Inquiries thereupon, in 1665. This book, which according to Samuel Pepys was ‘the most ingenious book that ever I read in my life’, contains an address to the Society which shows how the ‘MOST ILLUSTRIOUS ASSEMBLY’ wanted to see itself: The Rules YOU have prescibd YOUR selves in YOUR Philosophical Progress do seem the best that have ever yet been practisd. And particularly that of avoiding Dogmatizing, and the espousal of any Hypothesis not sufficiently grounded and confirm’d by Experiments. This way seems the most excellent, and may preserve both Philosophy and Natural History from its former Corruptions.
