The weather forecast for the next couple of days is for heatwaves. Tips for keeping animals cool - Position wildlife so they are not in direct sun, remember the sun moves during the day - Hottest part of the day is 11am - 2pm this will be high risk period - Always have water in your cage or aviary - Place cage in a cool shady position - Bring inside in a smaller cage or box - Wet towels, cardboard of tops of cages and aviaries - Mist spray (but not soak) animals - Spark or vitamins in the water - Lots of foliage inside and outside (sides and top of cages/aviaries) can be wet down - If you go out move the animal so when the sun moves its never in direct line of heat - Do not release animals in weather extremes Signs of heat stress - Panting or hyperventilating - Birds holding their wings out from body - Inability to fly despite having no injuries - On the ground - Lethargy - Green poo from stress Treatment - Move animals to a shady cool location or inside the house in a cool, quiet room - Offer water for rehydration - Mist with luke warm water (not cold as you may put the animal into shock) - Place a dish of water or a wet towel in the bottom of the cage (some animals thermo regulate with their feet. - Place wet towels over top and sides of the cage still allowing air to circulate Keep animal quiet until it recovers – hyperthermia and stress are lethal to birds.
