The whole point of opposing ISIS is to ensure their declaration of war on everybody that isnt ISIS comes to nothing. They dont consider the rest of us as human beings, unless of course we join them. Its no surprise that slavery, torture, genocide, and mass slaughter of prisoners are key parts of their strategy. For them, as it was with the Nazis of Germany and the Stalinist communist parties, democracy is a weakness of other more decent, more humane, societies, to be used as a vaulting pole to gain complete control and supreme authoritarian power, after which it can be swiftly eliminated. If ISIS are not vanquished soon, it will become clear their evil genie will never go back in the bottle. Its hard to see how all those institutions of freedom that we hold dear and which our immediate forbears fought so hard to accomplish - the UN Declaration on Human Rights, the various Geneva Conventions on war and genocide - can survive such an onslaught. Which western leader will be the first to mutter from the side of his mouth that it might be wise to suspend the conventions on genocide so that the crusade against ISIS wont have to fight with one hand tied behind its back. If that were to happen, would the conventions being set aside ever be unsuspended. This is turning out to be just as awful a century as the last one was.
