The widow woman made an assessment of her goods. She had little, came into agreement with her lack, and prophesied death for her family. Prophet Elijah comes along and challenges her faith. She accepted the challenge and the prophet opened up the windows of heaven causing the favor of God to rest upon the widows household. Anyone can preach to you when you are on the mountaintop and all is going well. One has the patience to submit to almost anything when their situations are intact but when a person is being challenged in their faith, they need someone to bring a word that will meet them right where they are. Our society may do well with the multitude of sugary, sweet, corn flake messages that some are hearing now, but when trouble hits the household, loved ones act unseemly, and the economy shifts again, there will be a demand on the pulpit to stop playing and start preaching, to stop teasing and start teaching. The people are going to need their faith challenged. The widow woman did not need a prophet calling out her social security number, proclaiming her to be the next great apostle, or sending her to the nations. She needed someone who could hear Heaven, whom Heaven responds to, and who can open windows over her life. She needed the real, not a flake. She needed a holy prophet of God. My prayer is that when your time of challenge in the faith comes that God will bless you with a holy prophet. And if you are already have such a person in your company, consider yourself blessed.
