The winner of the coveted Best Picture award of the MMFF 2014 was Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo. Im glad I got to see it. Surprisingly, Robin and Daniel Padilla did well to portray the characters. More shockingly, the films incredibly commendable cinematography coupled with its insistence to stick with the unconventional, albeit historical truths surrounding Bonifacios life, work and death struck itself apart from the cheap thrills plaguing the film festival. However, the scripts incapability to use a thesaurus for the words laban, bayan, and kalayaan -- borne out of the necessity to make every scene memorable and stirring -- only served to undermine that objective. Still, the movie is worth seeing as it stands as a reminder that the fatherland is an object of pride being the first Southeast Asian colony to rebel against a western power -- and a grim reminder of the harrowing effects of the cancer that is cutthroat politics.
