The woods in the back of the house are lonely without the deer. It has been quite sometime since I have see the pregnant one that would drink from the pond. She traveled with a younger one, its ribs were sticking out and it troubled me. Since fourth of July they have not come here, on that day they enjoyed the ears of corn, still warm off the grill no butter! For a few days now one lone Doe walks into the clearing, drinks and eats the carrots or grapes that I toss out for her. It is fun to see the look of surprise on her face at the first grape she ate! Sniffing as they do and then she ate it and then looked back at me like "WOW What Was That", she almost looked pleased! She continue to nibble leaving some on the ground as she went out of sight, wandering away to whatever new adventure of survival in her life! Today her visit was very brief, just passing though. I miss the days of the many that would be outside of my little studio, resting under the trees, some standing guard while the others somehow still chewing looked asleep. I miss the bucks their antlers still covered with the velvet, at times gentle but by the energy and look upon his face you knew who was KING! It must be a male thing!!
