The words pest species and weeds are a reflection of a bias - TopicsExpress

The words pest species and weeds are a reflection of a bias secularly anchored by which plants and animals are there to serve us or rejoice us, and that we have on them a discretionary right. These words are the translation of our self-centeredness (or anthropocentrism), of our ignorance and our narrow-mindedness. Animals considered to be pests species are only for us, and it is the same for herbs allegedly bad. In fact, we are one species among many others. Let us add, that facing to increased extinctions of species whose we are today responsible, we should deserve, alone, the qualifier of species highly detrimental to the harmony and the preservation of biodiversity. ~ Hubert Reeves (born in 1932), French-Canadian astrophysicist, scientist and environmentalist
