The work of the Pier.....The Mole in St-Malo, a great pier winding its way into the flows like the finger of God. Day or night, winter or summer it protects the harbor, whether it is necessary or not. Like good friends it’s only when we have a huge storm of course that we appreciate its reason d’être. Great waves fly over it. Mountains of white water rush it and batter it unmercifully. The pier shows us its value in difficult times, a bit like real friends. At the tip of the pier stands a red light. The bay is infested with such blinking lights, either green or red, the guiding lights for the ships making their way into our ‘safe’ haven; I ask myself if there is any other kind. (taken from my book, Up the walls and down the streets.....Eric) This is a scene taken from my favorite county in Ireland called Mayo where I worked happily for many years and reminds me of the pier not 200 meters from where I sit in my gallery awaiting the ghost of Christmas present and wondering if in fact Christmas this year has been replaced with Lent.....
