“The world is a bridge; so pass over it to the next world, but - TopicsExpress

“The world is a bridge; so pass over it to the next world, but do not try to build on it.” True freedom is attained from donning the cloak of humility and shyness and discarding the rags of arrogance and brazenness. Dignity with God comes from being humble before Him, rather than worrying about how mankind would judge us. The world is a means and must be treated as such. We seek it in order to carry ourselves to our destination, not so that we may nestle in it forever. As the saying goes, “The world is a bridge; so pass over it to the next world, but do not try to build on it.” Having a decent level of self-esteem to feel good about one’s own self and to dispense appreciation for those around us is a healthy state to be in. However, these are slippery slopes that a believer must tread carefully. {And never think that those who rejoice in what they have perpetrated and like to be praised for what they did not do - never think them [to be] in safety from the punishment, and for them is a painful punishment.} (3:188) {And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.} (31:18) By way of caution, we are recommended to be frequent in reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas and reminding ourselves about the oneness of God. Sincerity is difficult to maintain and needs regular effort – before, during, and after any action.
