The worst kind of criticism is given by uninformed, people without the facts, experience or comprehension of the subject matter to contribute positive solutions. We wish to remind our critics that whilst the Zoo has an owner that a minority wish to attack from the protection of their armchairs the Zoo is actually managed and has been for many years by a team. this team of 6 managers run the park from day to day and is responsible for the implementation of legislation and safety for the staff and public. We stand up and say to any non constructive critic that we have fought for years against tradition and the old fashioned concepts of captive animals and zoos. 20 years ago we were one of the first zoos in the world to design and work with electric fences to replace the horrible metal mesh cages that were so typical of zoos. when we take this approach positive animal welfare we accept a small risk of potential escape as the barrier is accepted as a mental barrier and not a physical one. When an animal faces a real threat to its life from its co inhabitants it may in very rare circumstances choose to face the fence rather than the teeth and claws. After this we do have a fence around the zoo to prevent any terrestrial animal from escaping outside but small primates are very difficult to restrict in this way. Take note no animal deemed a immediate danger to the public or staff are behind electric fences. We as a staff do get weary of reading ridiculous comments on web chat sites and in the media where the commentators have no idea at all about the situation. Many comments are libelous and designed to do maximum damage to the zoos credibility. The near 100 highly experienced staff here are 100% committed to the best possible life for their animals we are totally committed to protecting directly with our own staff and projects overseas with over 60 full time employees involved in dangerous and difficult work in the wild. We have made a huge difference to the way other zoos think about displaying animals throughout the world by our designs and we are proud of the way we are moving forward to improve the welfare of our animals even further in our expansion project. If this zoo was not here.... it isnt the Furness economy that would suffer the most......... it is the last 280 wild Sumatran tigers that would face the threat of imminent extinction as we have the only major protection programme in Sumatra right now. West African Giraffes would face a desperate future and the last Condors and Penguins of north western Peru would disappear within a short time. these are but a few of the major wildlife conservation issues we are at the heart and head of here at South Lakes Safari Zoo and when critics voice their ill informed views they should take note of the impact of their negativity on the most important thing to us .... the wildlife in the wild !! If you wish to voice your support for the zoo against all the ridiculous harassment we are experiencing from some quarters then voice it here or to the local councillors of Barrow Borough Council or The Management Team at SLSZ. Have a great day and dont forget every visit to this very unique zoo directly pays for the rarest animals in the world to stay on this planet.
