The young girl possibly a new recruit in Mc Donald’s blushed when she fumbled with her English while taking the order .My school days flashed in my mind ,I studied in so called English medium schools where except the textbook everything else was Assamese, even many teachers spoke in vernacular lingo in class ! Repeated pleas sometimes stern instructions by few teachers to converse in English among ourselves for our own good went in vain. The girls were a bit obedient but boys consistently used English while proposing to girls n seldom anywhere else :-) Now here in an outlet why I am behaving like a good pupil in an ‘English medium school’ whereas in whole school life we ignored the advice of a well meaning teacher. I pointed to the menu overhead and told her ‘Bhonti xei chicken burger tu , eta diba’, she got relaxed n asked me with a broad smile ‘ Sir ,coke eta dim neki’ ….:-)
