There appears to be an enormous divide in our world. Images of incredible wealth are offset by depictions of utter poverty. Luxurious mansions, food abundance and ease versus slums, starvation and struggle. Despite hundreds of years of rising general wealth, we still have a billion people surviving without access to clean water, good food or proper shelter. While the fortunate segments of society deal with the health effects of too much food, we have tens of thousands of people starve to death each day. The rest of the world tries to help. Foreign aid and development funding, coupled with endless hours of volunteer work, has achieved much success. However, the job is much bigger than we have been able to tackle. More resources are needed in order to eliminate the utter poverty that remains. Such a resource has been right under our nose for decades. Every day more than a trillion dollars is traded around the world in the currency trade market. A miniscule tax on this trade, first proposed by Nobel Laureate Dr.James Tobin, would supply the funds necessary to finally put in place the proper infrastructure and policies to lift the destitute to a level of self sufficiency and independence.
