There are a very few rickshaw drivers who are classified in the ‘good rickshaw guy category’. The one’s who don’t tamper with their meter, run by the meter and you can distinguish when they say yes or no. So, yes ever got a feeling that you’re not doing anything for the society? Well, Meet Santosh Ashok Gaikwad, his remarkable actions will rub it in for you. A rickshaw driver in Navi Mumbai he offers a free ride those who are physically challenged. Doing his daily runs, if he spots someone in need, the ride is free of charge. He says “I started doing this ten years ago. The purpose was my mother. She was physically challenged and passed away, in 2002 to honour her I started helping those in need. The idea is simple- if you do good, you at least feel good. And sometimes good things will happen to us. I was trying to get a permit since the past ten years. Nothing worked out, after helping the society I’ve got my permit. It feels good”. “Pechle dus saal seh kar raha hu. Meri Ma apahij thi, uski waja seh woh guzzar gayi. Uske teen saal baad mehne logo ki maadat karna shuru kiya. Dekho, seedhi baat hai- agar acha kaam karege, acha lagta hai. Aur kabhi-kabar apne saath bhi kuch acha hojayega. Dus saal seh permit ka lafda chalu hai. Logo ka madat kiya, uske baad milgaya. Acha lagta hai”. He has been recognised by the Navi Mumbai traffic police for his services to the society. The previous year he inspired an army of 59 rickshaw drivers to do the same from Vashi-Koparkhairane-Ghansoli. He is also going to be featured in the Limca books of record 2014. By far, the most interesting rickshaw driver I’ve met.
