There are in my opinion two types of thinkers: those who look at the bloody carnage from Egypt to Syria to Iraq to Bahrain to Yemen and beyond and with a certain air of smug self-satisfaction shake their heads and dismiss the entire course and causes of the Arab Revolutions as passing and whimsical --they did not believe in these revolutions when they first started and they now look around the Arab World and find every indication to support their cynicism--and then there are towering intellectuals like Azmi Bishara --his hands are on the bloody pulse of counter-revolutionary tides far more accurately than many and remains the most reliable barometer of what and where they are --and yet he remains unflinching in his visionary convictions about the future of these uprisings --as much as reading the first group draws you quickly to reach for your pillow, reading Azmi Bishara restores your confidence that against all odds the Arab world is blessed by thinkers who sustain its liberating visions of itself --this is how he finishes this crucial essay I post here: This current period of counter revolution is bloody, but it will pass. Sooner or later, the time will come when the democratic youth of these days will come to lead. For now, they should prepare themselves and organize by understanding the scale and gravity of the responsibility which has fallen to them. Do read the whole essay--
