There are many misunderstandings about medication assisted treatment, especially methadone. Help us reduce the stigma attached to this vital treatment by sharing our MYTH VS FACT post! MYTH: People are unable to function on Methadone. FACT: When people are receiving an appropriate dose of medication, withdrawal symptoms and cravings are minimized, and their ability to function at an optimal level is not comprised. In fact, the presence of methadone is undetectable in a patient who is appropriately dosed. A primary benefit of Medication Assisted Treatment is that it allows patients to stabilize, normalize, and provide them with the opportunity to regain a functional productive lifestyle. Signs of overmedication include drowsiness or “nodding off”, and listless mental status; sign of inadequate medication dosage include drug craving and anxious feelings or depression, irritability or fatigue. It is the responsibility of the patient to inform their treatment provider if they are experiencing symptoms of overmedication, and it is the responsibility of the program to look for these signs. Failure of the patient to notify clinic personnel when they are overmedicated is comparable to relapse behavior.
