There are many silly sayings in life, and to give but one example how about its the exception that proves the rule. Eh? So how about this, and doubtless there will be a fair few of you around who have heard if you havent been off you clearly werent trying hard enough. Oh yes, coz that makes perfect sense! Or it could be that you were driving within your own confidence boundary? Or it could be that you were tuned in to what the car was telling you and driving according to its messages? Or it could be that you are skilled and that your car control keeps you pointing the right way irrespective of a few moments en route? OR how about we invert the saying and assume that if you HAVE been off you clearly were trying too hard - that might follow, but its hardly a stiff rule. You might just have made a mistake, right? OR how about we look into the skittish nature of some front-drive hatchbacks where you might find yourself off circuit for not committing enough so that if you HAVE been off you clearly werent trying hard enough becomes accurate and turns the whole debate on its head! As with a lot of things around the track scene, you are right to ignore these silly statements of bravado and false ability - the sorts of people who like to say them HAVE been off, and realistically which would you rather? Keeping it on the black bits and incremementally increasing your ability and confidence to accommodate greater lap speed, or chucking it off, being the exception on the day but at least getting to prove THAT rule. Thought so too.
