There are so many sad stories coming out of the mountains. A family we care for dearly (not to mention one of the nicest families) lost their house in the fire that hit Winmalee on Thursday October 17th. A woman, two of her sons and their dog lived in the house. On the Tuesday, the woman had bought a lottery ticket and placed it under her husbands ashes in the house for good luck. Her husband passed away in April from aggressive throat cancer. He was a local hero - being a paramedic, he spent his life saving other peoples lives. The cancer took him much too quickly. He was one of the most fun-loving people you could ever meet. On Thursday, she took her dog for a walk. The dog was a huge part of the family and the husbands soul mate, that helped get him through his days when he was sick with cancer. After the walk, she went out for lunch. The fires hit quickly. She tried desperately to get back to the house, but the authorities at road blocks would just not allow it. The residents of Winmalee were very unaware those fires would come through, especially at that speed, that Thursday. The house was destroyed, along with everything in it. Every connection she had had to her husband is gone. His ashes, his possessions, everything. Her and the boys are okay. But what a devastating tragedy for a family that has just gone through one. The hardest thing for the family... was finding out the poor dog didnt get out.
